evolve 2

8-17 February 2024

Evolve 2 was a group show of contemporary printmaking and the culmination of three years of study at Hot Bed Press print studio, where I embarked on a year long research project investigating the fascinating species of Humpback Whales. Inspired by their biology, migration patterns, familial bonds and sense of community, my work for Evolve 2 aims to offer insights into these majestic, gentle giants of the sea, to tell their stories and remind us of our interconnectedness with the natural world.

My large-scale screen prints originated from intricate drawings inspired by maps, migration routes, and the topography of the ocean floor. These were then overlaid with prints derived from fluid ink paintings, mirroring the ridged textures and barnacle-clad surfaces of Humpback Whales. I scaled these prints to approximate life-size proportions, breaking down sections of the whale's body into metre-long images. By intentionally spacing the head and tail prints twelve meters apart, I sought to immerse viewers in the monumental scale of these magnificent marine mammals, evoking a sense of awe and reverence.

In addition to my print installation, I also conducted a live, life-sized drawing of a Humpback whale during the Evolve 2 exhibition. This interactive element successfully engaged visitors with my creative process whilst also fostering a deeper connection to the subject matter.
